TEDxHyderabad Salon - ART & MUSIC

19th June

A beautiful misty morning..
At Ethnic Hall, Shilparamam..
A gathering of around 45 Art & Music enthusiasts eagerly waiting for what the day brings..
The amazing TEDxHyderabad team has its 4th Salon today.

It is 10 minutes to 9 and we were given a yummy breakfast from 'Wich Please'.

The first thought leader of the day is RAVI SUBRAMANIAN, the founder of 'Monkster Music' talks about how music industry can flourish being independent to movies just like in the US and how his work revolves around it.

The second thought leader is MOHAN HEMMADI Ji. He is one of the first few people to bring Classical Music Concerts to the Hyderabad audience. He shares his childhood experiences of being brought up in the presence of music stalwarts like Pandit Ravi Shankar in Dharwad.

Then, there is a screening of a TED Talk by Nicole Paris & Ed Cage - 'A beatboxing lesson from father-daughter'. A lively talk with some thoroughly entertaining beatboxing. A perfect talk to listen on this Father's Day!

Another TED talk screened is of Benjamin Zander on 'The transformative power of Classical Music'. He shows us how children of different ages play piano and how playing a few particular keys gives us a particular emotion. A witty talk that makes us fall in love with the classical music!

After this, we start our journey in the super innovative and first of its kind, the 'X' Bus! The conversations continue with Ravi Subramaniam on building independent music industry and Mohan ji on his experiences of organising concerts with renowed artistes like Tirumali ji. Our next thought leader RAMAKRISHNA SHENOY tells us about the tireless efforts the theatre artists put in for a play and the difficulties they have to face to draw in the audience.

We arrive at our first destination of the day - thr breathtaking HILL FORT PALACE near Naubat Pahad. Here, our thought leader LAKSHMI NAMBIAR of Srishti Art Gallery talks about reviving this place for an art show and how the aura of this place perfectly matched the theme of the show and made it more interesting.

Our next thought leader Padma Shri MOHAMMAD ALI BAIG talks about what made him choose the theatre and how his father, the legendary Qadar Ali Baig Sahab influenced his interest in theatre. He, so engrossingly, spoke about his journey, artistes and the need of specific spaces for the plays to be performed.

Then, Lakshmi Nambiar takes us on a tour of that palace, explaining the history behind it. The session at this historic Hill Fort Palace ends with the customary TEDx group photo!

During the ride to our next destination, Gopal of Hyderabad Trails tells us about the history of Hyderabad and the interesting stories behind the names of 'Bhagnagar' and 'Hyderabad'.

We arrive at our next destination -the beautiful cultural space called 'SAPTAPARNI'. This space is created to accodomate classes and for the showcase of performing arts.

Here, our thought leader MANGALA BHATT, the very famous Kathak dancer gives an impromptu yet endearing performance which sparks our forgetten love for the classical dance forms. She shares her passionate journey of learning dance after her graduation and becoming one of the most celebrated dancers of our times.

Next thought leader D V RAMANA garu, Kuchipudi & Bharatanatyam dancer and founder of Rotary Sampradaya, shares his interest in dancing from childhood and his mother's encouragement. He also tells us about starting one-of-a-kind Rotary Club for promoting arts and culture - 'Rotary Sampradaya', and introducing a program called FMLR (Fellowship of Music Loving Rotarians). In this program, his team visits places like orphanages and oldage homes and does music concerts to entertain them. He says that the satisfaction he gets by seeing their smiling faces is priceless!

We then, proceed to the lovely 'KALAKRITHI ART GALLERY'. We are shown a TED Talk - The magical ingredient that brings Pixar movies to life by Danielle Feinberg. She tells us about combining two of her passions - science and art, to create the wonderful animated movies like Finding Nemo and WALL-E.

The next thought leader is ANURADHA PRASAD of 'Saptaparni' who tells us about her determination to start a multi-cultural space for all the performing arts.

RK SHENOY continues his conversation, telling us what made him start 'Dramanon' at Manipal University, opening its chapters in various places including Hyderabad and how studying architecture has helped the theatre artiste in him to understand the spaces better. He emphasises on the need of having more collaborative spaces for performing arts in Hyderabad.

Next thought leader, PRASHANT LOKATIA of Kalakriti Art Gallery shares his journey of following his passion in the middle age. He says the terms 'Art Curator' and 'Art Collector' are being used superficially but for someone to be an art collector/curator, one needs to have a deep understanding and love towards the art.

The session ends with a delicious lunch at the gallery. The conversations over food can't get more enriching!

During the ride back to Shilparamam, we are treated to wonderful songs by Harini ma'am, Ekta ma'am, Varun Sir and other attendees. We end the day with some lifetime memories, good friends and meaningful conversations.

As I get down the bus, I remember how Harini ma'am rightly reflected our feelings of the moment by beautifully singing 'Aaj jaane ki zid na karo..'!
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo TEDxHyd Salon!
